T-Mobile is ‘best for mobile broadband’

Friday, July 31st, 2009

T-Mobile mobile broadband customers receive the least financial punishment for exceeding their download limit, according to new research.

Dongle customers, perhaps with a Dell Mini Laptop or MacBook, are not charged for exceeding their limit as with other providers but are advised about a more suitable plan, a survey by moneysupermarket.com shows.

O2 customers are liable to receive the highest fine – £200.70 per GB – while 3 and Vodafone customers receive charges of £102.40 and £15 per GB respectively.

The poll also reveals that three in four mobile broadband customers (78 per cent) are at risk of incurring these charges.

Dongle users tend to be more at risk than fixed line customers of exceeding their limit, according to manager of mobiles and broadband James Parker.

He said: "Whilst the portability is great, users need to be aware that dongles are most suitable for light users, fixed line is a better value option for heavy users.

"Whether you download through a dongle or a fixed line you must be aware of any limits."

Alastair Davidson, director of strategy, marketing and business development at Arqiva recently suggested that wireless broadband should play a larger part in meeting the government’s Digital Britain expectations.

Spotify would ‘broaden iPhone 3G appeal’

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Bringing the free music service Spotify to the iPhone would broaden its appeal, according to mobile-phones.co.uk.

The streaming music service company recently approached Apple with a Spotify application for the iPhone 3G.

Apple has not yet announced its decision over whether to accept the streaming music application.

However, lead content writer for consumer website mobile-phones.co.uk believes that the appeal of a Spotify application would exceed lost iTunes revenue for Apple.

He said: "The timing of this also could not be better – T-Mobile and Orange will soon be selling the iPhone 3G as well as O2, which will almost certainly see a price war ensuing.

"The potential end result of this will be iPhone 3Gs at lower prices and the availability of an app that loads of people want, equalling loads more handset sales."

Apple announced that it had achieved a record number of 1.72 million music downloads in May 2009, with every month this year recording at least 1.5 million downloads.

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Underneath the screen, there is the standard D-pad, face buttons and analogue nub that were a feature on the first PSP.

Sony have also made Bluetooth connectivity and WiFi available on this latest device.

Meanwhile, according to Pocket Gamer, Sony’s LittleBigPlanet will be released as a handheld version for the PSP and will involve some crossover with the PS3 version of the game.

PSP to boost Assassin’s Creed 2 success

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

The availability of Assassin’s Creed 2 on the PlayStation PSP is set to boost the popularity of the game, claims Ubisoft.

Speaking in a conference call earlier this week, the games developer’s executive director Alan Corre said that the company expects to make 15 per cent more sales than the original.

He said: "Our previous guidance suggested it was going to sell less units than the first title.

"Most of this performance actually comes from the addition of one platform, the PSP, of which Assassin’s Creed was not released in the past. Half of this performance is done with guaranteed bundles."

It comes after the games developer announced last month that it is planning to develop a video game based on the adventures of the classic cartoon character Asterix.

The game is set to be released in October 2009 and will be created specifically for the Nintendo DS.

Broadband providers ‘not up to speed’

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Acer Aspire and Sony Vaio netbook owners may not be getting the broadband speeds that have been advertised to them, according to new research.

Over a quarter of consumers (26 per cent) are not receiving the internet speed they had expected when they signed up to the service, data from Ofcom has revealed.

The regulator conducted 60 million separate service performance tests between November 2008 and April 2009, finding that the actual average broadband speed was 3Mbps slower than the advertised headline speed.

Nine per cent of those that had signed up for headline speeds of 8Mbps only actually received average speeds of 6Mbps.

Jason Glynn, communications expert at uSwitch.com, explained it is worrying that suppliers have been advertising the wrong speeds for so long.

He said: "In Ofcom’s press briefing yesterday, it was actually admitted that no-one on an 8Mb package can get an 8Mb speed.

"Consumers will be very concerned that the industry has been promising something that it cannot deliver."

Samsung plasmas ‘growing in popularity’

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Revenue from Samsung plasma panel screens increased by nearly a quarter in the three months to July, suggesting heightened demand for the technology.

Overall, Samsung SDI profits increased by 17 per cent in the second quarter of this year, driven in part by growing interest in its plasma screen panels.

The company also expects global plasma panel demand to increase during the six months to the end of the year.

Speaking to Smart House, analyst at Samsung Securities Lee Jong-wook said: "Demand in the second half is rising faster than expected due to strong restocking demand from its customers on top of strong seasonality."

In June 2009, LCD panel shipments hit 46.7 million units, according to data from DisplaySearch’s monthly figures from the TFT LCD Shipments Database.

LCD TV panels had the highest growth, recording shipment increases of 57 per cent, year-on-year.

PS3 price drop was ‘never likely’ this year

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Sony were not likely to reduce the price of the PlayStation 3 (PS3) console this year because of "financial issues", it has been suggested.

Those waiting for a lower price console may have to content themselves with bids on MadBid.com or second-hand offerings to get a cut-down price.

Speaking to Eurogamer, vice-president of Epic Games Mark Rein indicated that Sony had a "difficult year" and so a price reduction would not have been good for the company.

He explained: "The truth is Sony has had a difficult year and I think they had to do what they had to do to try to be profitable.

"Lowering the price of the console would probably have made their situation worse. They will get around to it in their own good time."

He was commenting on recent comments by Activision chief executive Bobby Kotick in which he warned that he may pull future titles from the PS3 unless Sony drop the price.

Co-chief operating officer at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Jim Ryan told Emirates Business that sales of the PS3 have been strong across Africa and the Middle East.
