Apple ’struggling’ to keep up with iPhone demand

Apple’s iPhone 3GS is so popular that the company is struggling to keep up with demand, it has been claimed.

Consumers may start turning to auction websites, such as MadBid.com, to get their hands on a new iPhone 3GS, with the company admitting that it cannot produce enough models to meet global demand.

The announcement comes as part of Apple’s quarterly earnings statement, released yesterday (July 21st).

Figures indicate that 5.2 million iPhones were sold in the quarter ending June 27th.

Apple also sold 2.6 million Mac computers, an increase on the same period in 2008, while 10.2 million iPods were sold internationally in the three months to June 27th.

Steve Jobs, Apple’s chief executive, said that the company was "extremely pleased" with its popularity.

He said: "We’re making our most innovative products ever and our customers are responding.

"We’re thrilled to have sold over 5.2 million iPhones during the quarter and users have downloaded more than 1.5 billion applications from our App Store in its first year."
