New ‘invisible flash’ set for digital camera success?

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

A new invisible flash technology could revolutionise the way photos are taken using digital cameras, such as Panasonic Lumix or Canon Ixus models.

New York University researchers Dilip Krishnan and Rob Fergus claim to have developed a new flash that does not subject those nearby photographers to an intrusive flash glare when they take a picture.

The flash functions by using invisible parts of the light spectrum to illuminate subjects and landscapes when photographers want to take pictures in poorly lit environments.

In order to produce its effect, UV and IR camera filters must also be removed.

However, photographs do not quite provide a true representation of the lighting and do not pick up any colour.

The pair of scientists claim that this invisible flash picture must be followed immediately afterwards by another picture without any flash at all.

By using a new technique to combine the two images, a composite picture can be created that provides an even light balance with colours.

IPhone to face ‘more competition’ later this year

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Apple could meet with iPhone competition following new handset releases later this year, it has been claimed.

The iPhone has so far been "untouchable" since its release, with "usability" that far exceeds any other phones which do not "come close, according to the online editor of gadget website Stuff.tv.

However, Linsey Fryatt expects Apple’s iPhone to start facing competition from other developers later this year as they begin to catch up with the iPhone’s technology.

She said: "Later this year we’re going to see some interesting additions to the market, for example the Palm Pre.

"From what we’ve seen of it – we had a preview of it in January in Las Vegas – it looks very impressive."

Apple announced earlier this week that sales of the iPhone reached 5.2 million in the three months to June 27th.

This boosted the company’s net profits to £5.08 billion, compared to £4.5 billion over the same period in 2008.

Steve Jobs, Apple’s chief executive, said that the company was "extremely pleased" with its popularity.

PS3 Motion Control may feature ‘facial recognition’

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Sony’s Motion Control technology for the PlayStation 3 will feature facial recognition controls, it has been claimed.

New details of Sony’s PS3 Motion Control technology suggest that it could be a real rival to Microsoft’s Project Natal developments.

Speaking to the Mirror, Sony’s Paul Holman hinted at what Motion Control could be capable of, adding that "anything is possible".

He told the newspaper: "We have a lot of libraries in this space already to do with facial recognition, spatial recognition and gesture control.

"At the end of the day game designers and developers have to think about how they put them together."

Sony showed off its Motion Control at its E3 conference last month.

The wireless wand is capable of being tracked with the PS3 EyeToy camera, but is still in its prototype stage.

There are even suggestions that the wand has the potential to better Nintendo Wii’s MotionPlus technology add-on for its motion-sensitive remote controller.

Streaming music for Xbox Live?

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Microsoft could launch a streaming music service for Xbox Live "imminently", it has been suggested.

Speaking to the Telegraph, executive producer of Microsoft MSN Peter Bale explained that the service would be similar to the Spotify music service.

Crucially for gamers, he hinted that the service could be available on the Xbox 360 console.

He told the newspaper: "Music is an important area for Microsoft. We are looking at launching a music streaming service imminently.

"We are looking at how other similar businesses have structured their business models and trying to figure out what will work best for both consumer and Microsoft."

The Xbox 360 console appears to be particularly popular during the recession.

Director of product management for Xbox 360 Aaron Greenberg told Team Xbox’s news team that the Xbox 360 is the only console seeing growth "year-over-year".

He added: "We are also the fastest growing system right now in the top five European markets."
