Live English Al Jazeera app launched for iPhone

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

An English language version of new channel Al Jazeera is now available across the iPhone and iPod Touch devices.

The new application is being offered to consumers in collaboration with Livestation and will be available globally without restrictions.

Livestation claims that the quality of the channel’s video is affected by whether users take advantage of a 3G or Wi-Fi connection.

The channel will be available for at least six months from the date of the application’s purchase, offering a one-click access to the latest news and sport from the news agency.

An estimated 7.2MB of data will be required for every ten minutes of browsing.

Al Jazeera is also available on laptops through its partners, which include Bloomberg, BBC World News and France 24.

However, iPhone 3GS users have been warned that changes to the hardware configuration mean that videos may not play correctly on these devices.

Will Apple offer an iPod video camera?

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

IPod and iPhone owners have been given plenty to celebrate this week, with rumours suggesting that future models will have a video camera.

A source in Asia has told TechCrunch that Apple has placed a massive order for some camera modules.

Based on the size of the order, the source suggested that the cameras will be used for future iPods.

Apple may also be set to offer cameras on lower end models of the iPod, with the source even suggesting the camera could be incorporated into the iPod Shuffle.

TechCrunch also suggests that the quality of the newly introduced iPhone camera will have shaken the video camera market, which could see sales drop if the rumours end up being confirmed.

It follows the unveiling of the new MiLi Pro iPhone and iPod video projector, which is set to enable device owners to watch videos on a larger scale on any flat surface.

An exciting new soundboard is set for release for the entertainment of Apple iPhone owners, featuring the evil epitomes of actor David Sobolov.

Mr Sobolov is renowned for his evil character voices in video game titles such as Halo Wars and Call of Duty 4.

The iMEvil sound board’s utterances are set to provide hours of entertainment, with a total of 32 lines of sinister prose expected to be available within the next few weeks.

In total, Sobolov has more than 40 characters to his name, including voices in Call of Duty 1 and 4, Red Alert 3, Transformers, Unreal Tournament 3, Chronicles of Riddick, Everquest II and Prototype.

EU cuts mobile costs abroad

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Mobile phone users will now be able to save money when communicating within the EU, following the introduction of new telecoms regulations.

New rules which set the maximum charge for sending a text message at €0.11 (£0.09) mean that mobile owners will be spending almost three times less per text, on average.

Roaming call charges have also been capped and will cost no more than €0.43 per minute or €0.19 to receive one.

Commenting on the new rules, EU telecoms commissioner Viviane Reding said: "The roaming-rip off is now coming to an end.

"For now, EU rules are limited to reducing inter-operator charges. I call on the mobile industry to pass these savings on to data roaming customers swiftly."

The first action to reduce the cost of mobile phone use abroad was taken by the EU in 2007, when it reduced the cost of roaming calls by 70 per cent by capping the cost of all calls made using a mobile phone abroad.

Nokia, Samsung and Apple agree to ‘universal charger’

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Brits may soon be able to use the same charger for Samsung, Nokia and iPhones following a landmark agreement between manufacturers.

Ten mobile phone makers have agreed to create phones capable of being charged using the same device within the EU.

The companies signed a voluntary Memorandum of Understanding after the EU threatened to introduce legislation forcing them to comply.

European Commission vice-president responsible for enterprise and industrial policy Gunter Verheugen welcomed the agreement as an environmental breakthrough.

He said: "I am very pleased that industry has found an agreement, which will make life much simpler for consumers.

"This also means considerably less electronic waste, because people will no longer have to throw away chargers when buying new phones."

Under plans, future iPhone 3G, Nokia E71, Samsung i900 Omnia 8GB and Nokia 6300 models will all be capable of being charged using a micro-USB connector.

However, the new charger is not expected to be ready for use until 2010.

The announcement comes after new rules to cap the cost of roaming calls and texts throughout the EU were introduced.
