iPhone App Store sells more than 2bn applications

Apple has announced that iPhone and iPod Touch users have now downloaded more than two billion applications from the App Store.

The store is home to more than 85,000 applications, games and peripherals which improve the user’s iPhone experience, such as TomTom satellite navigation software, Commodore 64 emulators and Sky Sports football updates.

Apple also said that there are now over 125,000 iPhone developers who are working on bringing new apps to the store.

Steve Jobs, Apple’s chief executive, said that the App Store has reinvented what people can do with a mobile handheld device.

“The rate of App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billion apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone,” he added.

Application downloads could boom after it was announced that Orange will also be selling the device in the UK.

Up until now, the device has only been available to O2 customers but Orange, which is set to merge with T-Mobile, has signed a deal with Apple to also provide the phone.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19382956-ADNFCR
