iPhone has had huge effect on smartphone market

Monday, September 14th, 2009

The iPhone has had a “quite remarkable” impact on the smartphone and applications market, according to an industry expert.

Windsor Holden, principal analyst at Juniper Research, said that the iPhone has shifted the impetus across from the enterprise space into the consumer space, making the device more than a business tool.

He added: “It has become the leading consumer smartphone and has invigorated the consumer market in that regard. If you look now at people like LG, Samsung and Nokia, a lot of their new phones are based on touchscreen devices very similar, or with significant similarities, to the user interface of the iPhone.”

His comments came after research from MoneySupermarket.com which found that 43 per cent of mobile users said that they would consider switching, or have switched their mobile for, an iPhone specifically to access applications.

The survey also showed that the average ‘appster’ has downloaded nine applications in the past year, spending an average of £9 on them in total.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19360073-ADNFCR

Apple chief: iPod Touch “is a games console”

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Apple chief executive officer Steve Jobs has pushed the iPod Touch forward as a specialist games console.

Following the company’s It’s Only Rock and Roll press event, Mr Jobs told the New York Times that Apple was unsure how to market the Touch when it first hit the shelves.

He said: “Was it an iPhone without the phone? Was it a pocket computer? Then customers told us that they started to see it as a sole games machine. We started to market it that way and it has just taken off.”

“What we really see now is that it is the lowest-cost way to access the App Store and that’s the big draw,” he added.

Jobs also pointed to the sheer number of games that the Touch has, claiming that there are more than 21,000 in the App Store, compared with 607 for the PSP and about 3,700 for the Nintendo DS.

At the conference, Apple unveiled the fifth generation iPod Nano, as well as new operating firmware for the iPhone and the next version of iTunes.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19357869-ADNFCR

Cost of living in Britain starting to drop

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Deflation is now evident as the cost of living in Britain has dropped for the first time in two-and-a-half years, according to new figures.

Data from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) shows that shoppers are now paying 0.1 per cent less for their goods than at the same point last year.

Discounts on clothes, shoes and electrical goods could give a boost to customers looking for bargains and also to retail companies.

Stephen Robertson, general director of the BRC, confirmed that deflation had finally arrived.

“Falling prices are good news for customers and could give a much-needed boost to retail sales,” he added.

Food prices also dropped last month by 1.3 per cent, the sharpest fall since records started in December 2005.

Business secretary Lord Mandelson confirmed that the UK economy is coming out of recession but warned listeners of BBC Radio 4 that there was always a risk of a second recessionary dip.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19355562-ADNFCR

Samsung Omnia ‘a fine touchscreen phone’

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Samsung’s Omnia i900 mobile phone has received a four-star rating from technology reviewer Stuff.tv

Omnia, meaning ‘everything’ in Greek, literally has it all as users can view word documents, receive and send emails and browse the internet while the phone also carries GPS connectivity and an innovative touchscreen display.

Run by a Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system, which requires a stylus to navigate it, the device comes with TV-output capability and business card recognition software.

The phone is similar to the Samsung Tocco, with clickable widgets such as the clock and music player giving easy and quick access to popular features.

Wi-Fi and a super fast internet connection can give users speeds of up to 7.2 megabits per second while browsing the internet. Other onboard features include a five megapixel camera and eight gigabytes worth of storage for music.

The Stuff.tv review says the phone is a great competitor to the O2 exclusive iPhone.

“It has a very capable and attractive interface and it is also a good size and fun to use. If your network is not O2 then it is a great new touchscreen contender,” the review said.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19353247-ADNFCR

T-Mobile and Orange set to merge

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Mobile phone network providers T-Mobile and Orange are set to announce a merger deal which would see them claim a massive share of the phone market.

Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile and Orange owner France Telecom would hold about 37 per cent of the mobile market with over 28.4 million customers. A deal is expected to be completed by November.

It is thought that the agreement would see expanded network coverage, better network quality and improved customer services for consumers.

Timotheus Hotteges, chief financial officer of Deutsche Telekom, said that the merger would give T-Mobile UK a “clear and strong future” in one of the toughest and most competitive markets in Europe.

He added: “We will become the market leader and our customers will benefit in many ways, for example from the best mobile broadband offer in Britain.”

Simon Atkinson, business reporter for the BBC, said that the deal would shake up the mobile market as neither Orange nor T-Mobile have any of the “must have” phones on their networks at the moment.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19350851-ADNFCR

PlayStation 3 sales up by 999 per cent

Monday, September 7th, 2009

The new PlayStation Slim has been flying off the shelves this week, as it beat the Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and DS Lite by a ratio of three-to-one.

After launching on September 1st, the redesigned console’s week-on-week sales boosted the PS3′s by 999 per cent increase over the week prior to release, according to ChartTrack.

The sales tracking company said that the uplift might die down before another upturn around the Christmas period.

“This sales increase is very impressive, making the PlayStation 3 the top selling hardware in week 36. The Xbox 360, Wii and DS Lite all sold around the same amount last week, PS3 outsold each of them by a ratio of three-to-one,” said a ChartTrack spokesman.

Sales of the PlayStation 2 also climbed by 310 per cent on the back of the release of the Slim console.

Sony’s new lightweight Slim comes with updated 3.00 firmware which allows users quicker access to the PlayStation Store and the BBC’s iPlayer software, while power consumption has also been cut.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19348936-ADNFCR
