Quality of application developers ‘a great Macbook strength’

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Macbook users should take advantage of the range of free applications which will help them get the most out of their new computer.

The Notebooks.com blog said that people can improve their system with a number of free must-have tools which will help them work faster and keep their system in shape.

The Caffeine application by Lighthead Software is one that “people cannot live without”.

Its purpose is to keep the Macbook awake, so that with a single click on the menu bar, users can prevent their system from going to sleep or turning on the screensaver.

CoconutBattery by Christopher Sinai complements the Caffeine app perfectly as it gives Macbook users a deeper insight into how long their computer will operate for before needing a re-charging.

The programme will show the battery’s charge compared with the maximum charge as well as the original capacity so people can see if it is losing power and getting run down.

Apple developers have a fine track record in making applications, with over 100,000 of them existing in the App Store for iPhone and iPod Touch users.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19468447-ADNFCR

Smartphones ‘help save slump in mobile phone sales’

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Smartphone technology helped save worldwide mobile phone sales from dropping during the third quarter of 2009, according to research firm Gartner.

Brian Turner, executive editor of phone website MobileWire.co.uk, said that the raft of new smartphones, such as the iPhone and BlackBerry Storm2, had helped to provide the industry with a sales boost.

“Consumers no longer want a mobile phone – they want a mobile computing device with full multimedia functionality. It is important to realise that while price may represent an initial barrier to entry for consumers in developing countries, the demand for features remains strong,” he added.

His comments follow Gartner’s latest worldwide mobile phone market which report showed that there was only a 0.1 per cent increase in the number of standard phones sold in the last quarter compared with the same period last year.

However, smartphone sales surpassed 41 million units, which was a 12.8 per cent increase on quarter three in 2008.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19466391-ADNFCR

Olympic athletes to go on a Mini adventure

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Athletes, officials and staff at the 2012 London Olympic Games will be cruising around the city in Minis after a sponsorship deal was struck with BMW.

The German manufacturer has become the 24th sponsor of the event, which will see a fleet of 4,000 BMW cars, bicycles and Minis being used by the competitors.

As a top-level sponsor, BMW also becomes the game’s sixth sustainability partner, which means that it will be expected to meet a series of low-carbon and healthy-living challenges.

“BMW bicycles will be available for use by athletes in the Athletes Village and by London 2012 staff. BMW motorcycles will also be used in certain Olympic and Paralympic events,” a spokesman added.

Earlier this week, BMW reported that sales of its Mini car range had jumped 11.1 per cent year-on-year in October to over 19,000 units, mainly thanks to the success of its convertible model which saw a sales jump of over 300 per cent.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19465647-ADNFCR

Expert: LED looks destined to rule the TV world

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

The “majestic” Samsung LED TVs could be set to “rule the world”, according to a technology review website.

Stuff Magazine said that the fabulous picture quality, ultra-thin design and cheap price meant that the Samsung UE46B8000 was a market leader.

The 46in display, which is only 29mm thick at its deepest point, was enhanced by the “glorious” adornment of Samsung’s crystal finish, while an additional four HDMI, two USB connections and an ethernet port leant itself to be a TV of the future.

Ports such as these mean that users can play both movie, music and photo files from USB storage devices and PCs, while the ethernet connector allows for internet access through Samsung’s Media 2.0 online service.

“The sheer dynamism of its pictures is exceptional. At one end of the spectrum blacks look deeper, richer and more natural than those of any – repeat, any – standard, non-LED LCD TV,” the reviewer added.

LED technology in modern televisions is used instead of fluorescent lights to give brighter, more dynamic colours, while also allowing developers to produce thinner and lighter products.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19464080-ADNFCR

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Google has launched a major upgrade to its popular Earth application for users of the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The new version, which is free to download from the App Store, allows users the option to take their customised Google Maps with them wherever they go, while also adding numerous other improvements to the programme.

People can log-in to their Google Maps account and also view friends’ maps, which could feature recommended routes or places to see in a certain location.

Peter Birch, product manager at Google Earth, said: “Browsing the world from the palm can be a thrilling experience and viewing photos, Wikipedia articles and place information is a great way to discover new parts of the globe. With the latest version of Google Earth for iPhone, we have made this even easier.”

Other new features allow users to tilt their phone to adjust their view on hilly terrain, while cities, places and business can also be found around the globe.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19463622-ADNFCR

Entry-level Macbook specs impress critics

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Apple’s latest entry-level Macbook is an “impressive” addition to its portfolio thanks to its improved specifications list, according to an industry expert.

Garry Barker, reviewing the new product for the Brisbane Times, said that the features in the machine closely resemble those in the more expensive Macbook Pro, which means that customers are getting good value for money with the entry-level device.

Made from a one-piece uni-body in white polycarbonate plastic, the Macbook has a sleek, sturdy design, which will not collect dust and dirt as there are no joints or gaps.

It also features a backlit LED screen giving a screen resolution of 1,280 by 800 pixels and furthermore a smart button-free multi-touch trackpad which adds to the space-age look of the Macbook.

Apple is wireless-oriented and the machine comes with Bluetooth, and of course, 802.11n high-speed Wi-fi for getting the homework done while munching something healthy in that well-known restaurant chain with free hot-spots,” added Mr Barker.

The Macbook also contains an iSight camera, which can be used to take photos, shoot videos or to chat anywhere with friends around the world.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19460734-ADNFCR
