2010 will be an ‘incredible year’ for console game fans

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Some blockbuster games will be released in the first six months of 2010, according to an industry expert.

Jamie Sefton, sector manager of Game Republic, said that many companies have delayed the release of some of their titles until next year, meaning that, in the next quarter, some "amazing" games will be hitting the shelves.

"I really think it is going to be an incredible time for gamers. What is most exciting is that you have the PlayStation motion controllers coming out and then Project Natal from Microsoft for the Xbox – which is happening towards the end of next year," he added.

Mr Sefton said that some titles to look out for in 2010 include Mass Effect 2, BioShock 2, God of War III and Super Mario Galaxy 2.

According to research by Experian Hitwise, UK internet searches for video games increased by 28 per cent immediately after the release of the much-hyped Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 in November.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19536055-ADNFCR

Apple has launched a counter attack on Windows 7, claiming that the new operating system is ’still just Windows’. Windows 7 is due to be officially launched on October 22nd, with early reviews saying that it is an improvement on the previous Vista iterations.
Bill Evans, spokesman for Apple, said: “New Mac users continually tell us that they are tired of all the headaches with Windows and they want the ease of use, stability and security of a Mac. At the end of day, Windows 7 is still just Windows.”
Apple also claims that the inconvenience of having to perform a clean install from Windows XP is one of the reasons why people might seek an alternative, such as switching to a Mac.
Some of the end-user improvements that Microsoft has made to its new operating system include speed, compatibility search and organization functions and window stacking to allow users to manage multiple open documents. ADNFCR-2524-ID-19413291-ADNFCR

iPhone and Wii included in gadgets of the decade list

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Apple’s iPhone and the Nintendo Wii have both been included in the Daily Telegraph’s list of the top ten gadgets of the noughties.

However, both products lost out to the eventual winner, the Apple iPod, which was described by the newspaper as "the undisputed gadget of the decade".

Claudine Beaumont, technology editor for the Daily Telegraph, said that when the original iPod went on sale in October 2001, few could have predicted the way it would revolutionise the music industry.

Commenting on the Nintendo Wii games console, Ms Beaumont said: "More than 56 million Wiis have been sold worldwide and players can use it to experience everything from snowboarding to armed combat to balancing exercises."

The iPhone also came in for praise from the editor, stating that it had redefined the mobile phone experience with its elegant touch-screen and handy features including navigation software.

Thanks to developers, the iPhone has gone from strength to strength, with over 100,000 applications currently available to download in the App Store.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19536056-ADNFCR

Nintendo Wii has ‘taken the world by storm’

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

The Nintendo Wii console has been an excellent entry into the console genre over in the last decade, according to an industry expert.

Eric Doyle, writing for ComputerWeekly.com, said that despite facing stiff competition from the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the Wii has "taken the world by storm".

"Reviewers mocked the Wii’s name and slated it as underpowered technology compared to the super-consoles it was up against. What they couldn’t have foreseen is the success of the software," he added.

Mr Doyle also commented that the Wii’s secret weapon is its clever remote control, which makes use of built-in motion sensors.

He added that with software such as Wii Fit leading the way by latching on to the health boom, each title seems to involve a new add-on with mats, balance boards and tennis racquet modifications all proving popular.

The popularity of the Wii was shown in the Christmas gaming charts, with six titles present in the top-ten of the all-formats category.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19533756-ADNFCR

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 shoots to Christmas number one

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Holding onto the top-spot for the seventh consecutive week, Call of Duty looks like finishing the decade standing on top of the pile, according to the latest figures from Chart Track.

However, in a Rage Against the Machine-style comeback, Fifa 10 also proved to be a very popular title over the Christmas period and currently remains only 2,000 units behind the war shooter.

With the festive period seeing a jam-packed football calendar being played out, those who have caught the bug might want to give one of the sport’s biggest selling games a try.

Assassin’s Creed II moved up two places over the Christmas period to third in the charts, while Nintendo Wii’s big three of Wii Sports Resor, Wii Fit Plus and Super Mario Bros are all proving very popular among gaming fans.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19533761-ADNFCR
