Laptop owners ‘need to keep Windows 7 up-to-date’

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Christmas bargain shoppers who are picking up a new laptop need to make sure that they continue to update Windows 7 to protect themselves from the latest security threats.

Tom Royal, deputy editor at Computeractive, said that keeping the operating system up-to-date with the latest security releases is “absolutely vital”.

“No software or operating system is perfect and there are loads of people out there looking to exploit any possible weakness that’s discovered,” he added.

Mr Royal also commented that “the bad guys” move quickly to capitalise on any flaws, so it is “vital” to keep up to date with the latest patches and security updates.

His comments come on the back of research from solutions provider Panda Security, which said that the next two years will see malware developers’ attentions shift to Windows 7 in a major way because of its increasing popularity among owners of new PC and laptop owners.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19526276-ADNFCR

Need for Speed Shift ‘a glorious return to greatness’

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

The PC version of Need for Speed Shift has been crowned as a “glorious return to greatness” in a review by an expert gaming website.

Chris Roper, reviewing the title for IGN.com, said that the game nearly verges on excellence, with a driving experience that is “practically dead-on in terms of what it’s like to race around some of the world’s best racing circuits”.

He added that, while the career mode could have been improved, the act of driving is “basically phenomenal”.

Motor racing fans can experience the thrills of racing around some of the most dangerous tracks in the world, with the Nordschleife in Germany and Belgium’s classic Spa Francorchamps included.

The car list is also impressive, with gamers being able to hop inside machines ranging from Aston Martins to Larborghinis to BMW M3s.

However, the 1994 McLaren F1 car is one of the highlights, with gamers having to control its extreme power if they want to get round the circuit in one piece.

Need for Speed Shift is also currently available for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19526044-ADNFCR

Research: LCD TVs ‘powering Christmas sales’

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Sales of LCD TVs are helping to boost retailers’ profits in the run-up to Christmas, according to one industry expert.

Britt Beemer, chief executive and founder of America’s Research Group, said that worldwide sales of products such as the Sony Bravia 32” LCD TV are ensuring that companies turn a profit over the busy festive period, despite the recession.

The specialist claimed that consumers are increasingly seeing the benefit of adopting the latest electronics, such as the LOGIK L22LID648 22″ HD Ready digital LCD TV, particularly with the widespread adoption of high definition boxes.

“Electronics sales, especially flat-panel TV sets, are flying out the door this Christmas season. When flat-panel TV sets hit the magic price point, sales go up like a rocket. Twenty years ago, the same thing happened with VCRs,” Mr Beemer explained.

Meanwhile, Don Lindich, writing in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, recently said that people who possess game consoles such as a PS3 or Xbox 360 will find that investing in an LCD TV enhances their experience considerably.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19523800-ADNFCR

Britons continue to spend more on online shopping

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Bargain-hunters in Britain spent 25 per cent more on internet shopping last month than in October, according to new data.

The IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index revealed that British shoppers spent £5.3 billion online in November. This was also up by 11 per cent on 2008.

It is also believed that shoppers are continuing to hold out for online bargains, rather than reducing their online spending.

Tina Spooner, director of information at IMRG, said that it is encouraging to see continued growth in the e-retail market, which is clearly an indication of consumers’ confidence in the online channel.

“We would expect this positive growth in online festive sales to continue during December as retailers seize the opportunity of targeting their customers with promotions and offers in the final shopping days in the run up to Christmas,” she added.

Earlier this month, online retailers were told by the Daily Mail that millions of people will be using Christmas Day to shop for bargains, with many sales starting at midnight on Christmas Eve.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19523030-ADNFCR

Samsung NC10 used to play retro games

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Although netbooks are not designed for playing games, Samsung’s standout NC10 model is proving very capable in this area.

Described by PC Pro as the “best netbook of the bunch” in a review, the NC10 has been tested by numerous people around the world, with older titles running impressively smoothly on the system.

Classic shooters such as the first two Max Payne games run flawlessly, with gamers having to guide the assassin through a number of levels to gain revenge on those that had ruined his family.

Motor racing fans will also find that TOCA Touring Cars 2 will also run, giving users the opportunity to compete in the saloon car favourite series.

Older versions of the multi-million selling Championship Manager series are also perfect for playing on the NC10.

According to gamers on the Sammy Netbook community, Grand Theft Auto Vice City, Worms World Party and Quake Arena also are perfectly playable.

This means that, as well as being a great machine for producing Word documents and for watching and listening to multimedia content, games fans can also relive some of their classic titles.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19523039-ADNFCR
