Football apps receiving positive reviews on iTunes

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

A number of football applications which allow ardent fans to keep bang up to date with their favourite club are being well received in the App Store.

The program for the iPhone and iPod Touch are currently available to download from Apple‘s online catalogue, including ones for Chelsea, Everton, Arsenal and Manchester United.

Recently made available, the Chelsea portal has received an average of four stars out of five, with one user claiming that it is “a great app, with great features at a great price”.

Fans can now keep up to date with club information while they are travelling or at work, including latest news, tables, fixtures, player biographies.

Apple Macbook 13in named as a favourite of 2009

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Apple’s 13in Macbook has been named as one of the best laptops of 2009 by a technology expert.

CNet.com’s guide to the best portable computers of 2009 stated that the unibody design has been promoted to the “Pro” series, all while adding features and cutting the base price.

The Samsung N120 was described by the website as an “excellent entry” into the market, adding that it is an incredibly tempting product for anyone looking into netbooks.

HP‘s Pavilion dv6 is a “gorgeous” laptop available at an affordable price, with tech fans being advised to check-out this product if they are wanting a new machine.

Talking about the trends of laptops and netbooks in 2009, CNet.com said that “very decent” products are now being sold for less money, while the optical drive has also began its slow and inevitable death spiral, seeing its status move from “necessary to accessory”.

In a poll by ProCompare.com, Sony Vaio‘s NW 15.5in laptop came out on top thanks to its mixture of power and style.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19555798-ADNFCR

Education ‘can be boosted’ by having a computer at home

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Having a PC or laptop at home can help a child to improve their educational achievements, according to an industry firm.

A spokesperson for Becta, a group which is leading the national drive to inspire the innovative use of technology through learning, said that the government’s Home Access programme will be a huge step forward for many children and families in closing the digital divide.

The comments came after information published on Number10.gov.uk, which said that thousands of families will be able to claim free computers and internet access in a bid to boost the learning potential of lower income families.

“Recent evidence has suggested that having a computer at home associates with a two grade improvement in one subject at GCSE. This means that a pupil who would have got a D could, with the effective use of technology at home, now get a B at GCSE,” added the spokesperson.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19555784-ADNFCR

iTunes ‘still Top of the Pops ahead of Spotify’

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

iTunes is still the market leader when it comes to a one-stop shop for music downloading and listening, according to an industry expert.

Jonathan Shingler, research analyst at consumer electronics information company GfK Technology, said that Spotify is a limited threat to Apple‘s iTunes store, which is included on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

“Spotify is music only and therefore does not provide the wealth of experience that iTunes does,” he added.

The expert also commented that iTunes has “horizontally expanded,” providing users with access to applications, movies, videos and podcasts as well as music, which can all be played on the Apple handheld devices.

Paul Brown, vice president of strategic partnerships at Spotify, told BBC 6 Music that while the service is not yet profitable, the firm is seeing “pretty stellar” growth in revenues through the recession.

He added that, in the next year, Spotify should be making a profit as it currently has several hundred thousand premium subscribers paying a £9.99 fee each month.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19553271-ADNFCR

Apple Macbook to be standout product of 2010

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

The Apple Macbook MC207LL/A will be the best laptop product of 2010, according to an industry blog.

A review posted on NewsTrendsToday.com stated that despite owning a previous generation Macbook, upgrading to the new model was a “no-brainer”.

Despite stating that the two machines look very similar, the writer was impressed by the new backlit screen which gives sharper and brighter colour output.

“Next, the new multi-touch trackpad is just awesome. I loved the old one but this new one just blows my mind. I can use one or two fingers to perform different actions in half the time it would take me on my old computer,” the blogger added.

The new OS X Snow Leopard operating system also came in for praise by the blogger, stating that his system runs a lot quicker as it does not use up as many resources, admitting that “it really makes a big difference”.

Another major selling point of the Macbook is its new unibody enclosure, which provides a sturdier casing for people who are always on the move.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19553288-ADNFCR

Wii Fit Plus a ‘great follow-up to a classic title’

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

The Wii Fit Plus is a worthy successor to what was already a “classic title”, according to a review by a technology website.

Lucy Glennon, writing for ElectricPig.co.uk, said that the new game includes everything which was loved in the original game, plus extra features which will continue to draw non-gamers towards the console.

An on-board calorie counter has now been included with the title, which works by tracking the metabolic equivalent value and calculating how energy is being used by the gamer.

“It’s remarkably accurate, so if you’re feeling guilty after scoffing that family bag of crisps, then you can redeem yourself by working-off the calories by going for a Wii-style bike ride or indulging in some hula hoops (the exercise, that is),” she added.

The Wii Fit Plus title also allows gamers to plan a customised workout routine, enabling them to work on a certain area of the body during each session.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19553282-ADNFCR

Microsoft shows off new Natal controller

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Microsoft has given a further demonstration of the capabilities of its advanced controller-free gaming experience at the Consumer Electronics Show last week.

The technology giant showed off Project Natal, which is due out in the holiday season of 2010 for all existing Xbox 360 consoles.

Ally Millar, editor-in-chief of gadget site Geeks.co.uk, said that the control system has created such a buzz because analysts know the technology will be at the top of the tree for a decade.

Mr Millar added that he also expected 3D full-body gaming to come to the fore in the coming years.

“There was a time where we thought the Wii‘s approach to wireless motion-detecting gaming was here to stay. Microsoft bettering the Wii is a real change in the tide – they have developed seminal technology other manufacturers will fail to best for another few years,” he added.

The state-of-the-art controller will track movement of the body and facial expressions as well as give voice control capacity for gamers to control their movements on upcoming titles.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19550628-ADNFCR

Online sales ‘a welcome Christmas present for retailers’

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Online shoppers have helped to ensure a successful Christmas period for the nation’s retailers, according to an industry expert.

David Smith, director of operations at IMRG, said that internet activity over the festive period became part of most people’s shopping routines, whether this was emailing friends, social networking or surfing for bargains.

"Online retailers were able to benefit from this changing consumer behaviour by achieving record sales volumes with many sales and offers starting on Christmas Eve," he added.

It was also found that the Royal Mail strike action did not deter people from placing orders in the weeks before Christmas. Furthermore, 41.3 per cent stated that they are planning to spend more online next December after having a positive festive shopping experience last year.

Chris Russell, director at eDigitalResearch, added that retailers offering much later delivery dates for Christmas orders had helped increase revenue for the 2009 festive period.

Earlier this week, House of Fraser stated that it had posted a 91 per cent online sales jump in the run-up to Christmas.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19550667-ADNFCR

Facebook fans benefit from new iPhone upgrade

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Facebook members who have downloaded the social networking application for the iPhone have been boosted by an updated feature list.

The 3.1 version of the programme now adds push notifications, which means that every time a person receives a message or comment on their profile then they will get a message on their handheld device.

It also allows the ability to synchronise Facebook friends with the phone‘s address book, including photos, so every contact will be updated with a latest mobile number as well as a profile picture which will come up on screen when they ring.
