Operating system ‘to be the difference in 2010′

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Apple and BlackBerry have been told that 2010 will be the year of the operating system, which will decide the success of individual handsets, according to an expert.

With an iPhone 4G rumoured to be in development, mobile phone users have been told that they will be "overwhelmed" with different operating systems this year.

Neil McHugh, co-founder of Rightmobilephone.co.uk, said: "Some will fall away into obscurity but those that can provide a robust, reliable, easy-to-use operating system and manage consumers’ ever growing communication and social interaction needs, will be the big winners of 2010."

The expert added that mobile phones such as the iPhone have become very personal and reflective, with new products needing to continue supporting technology improvements.

Earlier this week, research firm Gartner revealed that the iPhone’s market share has jumped by around six percentage points from 8.2 to 14.4 per cent from 2008 to 2009.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19639764-ADNFCR

We7 launches music streaming application

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

A new music streaming service has been launched for the iPhone, allowing its premium plus subscribers to listen to their favourite tunes while they are out and about.

The application, which is now available in the App Store, will not be fully activated until March 1st, and will only work for those who have signed up to its £9.99 per month service.

Steve Purdham, We7’s chief executive, said that the two-tiered subscription, which allows users to turn adverts on or off, will help the company fit into a digital music economy where “there is no single business model that fits all”.

We7 will face fierce competition from Spotify for fans of streaming music, with the Swedish service releasing an application last year.

The programme allows users of the iPhone to search for new music and store playlists on their phone for use when they are without a connection to the internet.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19636744-ADNFCR

LCD TV shipments ‘bucking the recession’

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

LCD TVs are becoming more popular, with new research showing that shipments grew worldwide by 37 per cent last year.

DisplaySearch, a visual market research firm, said that last year shipments of ordinary TVs grew by two per cent, with the LCD units far outstripping this number.

Because of the recession, many products have been discounted to stimulate buying, with flat panel technologies such as LCD enjoying better growth in 2009 than they did in 2008.

The final quarter of 2009 showed even stronger year-over-year unit shipment growth, with LCD TVs climbing by 50 per cent on the previous year.

Paul Gagnon, director of DisplaySearch, said: “The better-than-expected 2009 results clearly demonstrate that consumers still have a strong desire to purchase flat panel TVs, but at the same time are willing to shift their buying behaviour to match their budget in a recession-plagued year.”

In other LCD TV news, LG has announced that it is set to expand its operations in the flat panel industry.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19634866-ADNFCR

Google Chrome ‘perfect browser for netbook users’

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Computing fans who have recently bought a new netbook should try using the Google Chrome internet browser, according to an expert.

Joanna Stern, writing for LaptopMag.com, said that the programme is the “perfect” modern-day browser for a netbook.

She added that most netbooks running Microsoft Windows XP are packaged with Internet Explorer 6, which is now more than two years old.

“Download Google Chrome, the perfect modern-day browser for a netbook. Not only does it boast good memory management, but since it recognises each web page as a different process, if one site freezes, you don’t have to restart the entire browser,” she commented.

She also said that by pressing Ctrl and + users can enlarge text, making it ideal for netbook reading.

Other advantages of using Google Chrome on a netbook include being able to add themes and colour to a desktop by brightening up the programme with fresh designs.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19634037-ADNFCR

Apple products highlighted in technology revolution

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

A number of products made by Apple have been highlighted as being part of a recent technology revolution.

Brad Reed, writing for PCworld.com, said that for the past dozen years, Steve Jobs, chief executive of Apple, has led the firm to bigger and smaller product ventures.

The 2001 launch of the iPod is where Apple cemented its status as this decade’s comeback kid, according to Mr Reed.

This was then backed up by the 2006 release of the MacBook Pro, MacBook and MacPro, integrating Intel processors into its computers for the first time.

In the following year, Apple unveiled its iPhone and iPod Touch, which “turned the wireless phone market permanently on its head”, according to the expert.

Mr Reed also said that despite not being a revolutionary innovation, the MacBook air launch in 2008 served as a nice new product to show off while Apple worked on its iPad tablet.

It is this tablet which is currently being greatly anticipated, with the stylish device set to be released later this year.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19634034-ADNFCR

iPod Touch users given takeaway food application

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Peckish iPod Touch owners can now order food from their handset and have it delivered, saving them from messing around with mountains of menus.

A new Wagamama application which is available to download for free from the App Store was launched earlier this week, meaning that people can now order their food and arrange to collect it at the touch of a few buttons.

iPod Touch owners will be asked to choose their preferred Wagamama restaurant, select the items that they want to order and then make a payment using a secure online system.

Steve Hill, chief executive of the pan-Asian food provider, said that he was “proud” that the firm was introducing the application to owners of the Apple device.

“It’s great to be bringing the speed and quality of Wagamama’s service to the latest in consumer technology,” he added.

A recent launch of a similar Domino’s Pizza application in Australia has led to the firm seeing a “significant” rise in sales.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19634031-ADNFCR

Sales of smartphones continue to grow

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android phone were among the top selling smartphone devices last year, with customers looking increasingly towards applications when buying a new handset.

Technology research firm Gartner said that the iPhone and the Android saw the largest increases in the worldwide smartphone market, with the Apple product taking a 14.4 per cent share and the HTC 3.9 per cent.

The iPhone also managed to clip the wings of Microsoft’s Windows Mobile, with its market share dropping from 11.8 per cent to 8.7 and the Apple device becoming the market leader.

However, Symbian, which powers many Nokia devices, remained the dominant smartphone operating system, with a market share of 46.9 per cent.

Applications are playing a large role in people’s smartphone choices, according to Gartner, with Apple having three billion of them downloaded in the last 18 months.

Among those that have proved popular include a Sky Mobile application which allows people to watch live sports programmes and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19632116-ADNFCR

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

MINI has announced that it is adding a world-first in-car entertainment system to its new Countryman model. Known as MINI Connected, the USB interface will allow maximum integration of the iPhone into the in-car audio system. O2 and Vodafone top of iPhone network speed tests

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

iPhone fans researching which network to get their handset on have been given the results of new network tests, which show that O2 and Vodafone have come out on top.

Research by SIRODA, a company which tests radio frequencies and capabilities, found that Vodafone is the fastest operator in the UK for accessing the web, while O2 won for the speed of music downloads.

It measured five UK operators across a 60-day period in 150 different locations to come up with the results.

Last month, Vodafone managed to achieve the fastest web access speed outside of London. However, the capital recorded the quickest access time at 1.7 seconds, 30 per cent quicker than the slowest operator, iPhone fans have been told.

On the downloading front, something which is important to iPhone users, O2 was the fastest network to get an MP3 file over in 12 out of 20 cities.

Recently, iPhone users were boosted when Apple increased the cap for downloads over 3G networks from 10mb to 20mb.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19631346-ADNFCR
