‘Little to complain about’ with Apple Macbook

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

The Apple Macbook 13 inch model is an impressive machine which gives performance levels very close to the Pro version, according to an expert.

Chris Hall, reviewing the machine for Pocket-Lint.com, said that stacked up against the most basic Macbook Pro, the 13 inch Macbook looks “pretty good”, having the same processor, RAM , graphics and a larger capacity hard drive, all for less money.

He added that the machine has a certain elegance about it, with the lid fitting perfectly when closed and providing a sturdy casing for carrying around in a bag.

“Inside you get the isolated keyboard, which is very comfortable to type on. There is less of a definition between the trackpad and the body of the Mac on this plastic model than there is on the aluminium versions, but … we didn’t find that to be a problem,” he added.

The Macbook 13 inch also has a battery which lasts seven hours off one single charge, meaning that it can be taken anywhere for work or play.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19631342-ADNFCR

Wii ‘can be used alongside exercise regimes’

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Gaming fans can complement their current exercise regime by using the Nintendo Wii, according to an expert.

Michelle Pertzborn, a clinical exercise psychologist at St Mary’s in the US, said while it might take more than a few sessions on the console to see weight loss results, it makes a great addition to a keep-fit regime.

“You’re burning calories. You’re increasing your energy expenditure, so you are getting some benefit from that,” she added.

Mother of two Julie Botham told the source that the games console has helped her get off the sofa, trading thumb exercises on other consoles for movement.

“I’ve been wanting to get more into the yoga-type stuff, and instead of joining a class and spending money I said, ‘well, this works’. So we got this instead,” she said.

Earlier this month, the News of the World reported that Lara Roberts, 38, lost eight stone by incorporating the Wii into her exercise regime.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19631339-ADNFCR

Young people encouraged to photograph best of Bristol

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Photography is often touted as one of the best ways to capture a moment or document an event.

Now, young people in the south-west are being encouraged to take up photography as a hobby in the form of a new competition, thisisbristol.co.uk reported.

Individuals aged 19 and under are eligible to take part in the contest, with the winning images to be displayed during May’s Bristol Festival of Photography.

Participants are divided into different age categories – the under fives, five to 11, 11 to 14, 14 to 16 and 16 to 19.

There is no limit to a photographer’s subject, so young people can really be creative about their image choices.

Luckily, there is no shortage of things to photograph in the city. From the Clifton suspension bridge to the SS Great Britain, there are a number of subjects to catch a budding photographer’s eye.

This year will see the first Bristol Festival of Photography, with the event taking place between May 20th and June 9th.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19630941-ADNFCR

Final Fantasy to launch on iPhone

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

One of the world’s most popular roleplay games is being made available to iPhone and iPod users this week.

Final Fantasy, which first appeared in 1987, is being launched on the Apple platforms as an app on Thursday (February 25th).

The game, which has been remastered ahead of its introduction to the App Store, is based on versions designed for the Sony PSP in 2007.

Game players can look forward to improved graphics on the iPhone version, while touch controls will also be a central feature.

Despite the game being launched in just two days, developers have yet to announce a price for Final Fantasy, with iPhone users having to access the App Store on the day to see how much it will set them back.

Developers are currently working on an update for the full version of Final Fantasy XI, which is expected to be released during the middle of next month. Both Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II are available for download.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19630938-ADNFCR

Netbooks ‘becoming a more viable computer choice’

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

The popularity of netbooks appears to be growing as they are becoming a viable choice when people are shopping for a new computer, according to an industry blog.

Ecommercejunkie said that netbook manufacturers are making a dent in the market with older consumers, as they are people who do not necessarily need huge high-definition screens and beefy processors.

A recent survey by PriceGrabber.com found that 55 per cent of respondents said that netbooks were still a complementary tool to a laptop rather than a replacement. However, the assertion that 45 per cent think that they definatley are a good replacement was a good sign.

“It represents a significant increase in popularity over a very short period of time for a new product competing against one that has had a solid hold in the marketplace and the consumer psyche for quite a while,” added the blogger.

Last week, technology giant Samsung unveiled its new 4G netbook, the N150, which could be the face of super-fast broadband portable computing.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19628494-ADNFCR

More than 3.5 million download new shooter demo

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Gaming fans on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are set to make a new war game one of the most downloaded demos ever.

Proving the popularity of both consoles’ ability to download game trials before buying the real thing, Electronic Arts has revealed that its forthcoming title Battlefield: Bad Company 2 has now been downloaded more than 3.5 million times.

These figures mean that the game is bound to be a worthy contender to challenge Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which became one of the biggest selling titles ever last year.

On Electronic Arts’ official Twitter feed, it confirmed the number of downloads so far, adding that it will be released on March 5th.

Previewing the title, Gamezone.com said that its time with the demo was “definitely a positive experience”, adding that the title is one to keep an eye out for when it launches early next month.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19628487-ADNFCR

Photography lets people ‘capture that special moment’

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Taking up photography gives people the opportunity to capture special and unique moments, according to an expert.

Amber Flowers, digital artist and author, told BG Daily News that she has been getting out and seeing more of the world because of photography, spending less time in front of a computer and more time doing her hobby.

"If you’ve seen an amazing photo online, in a paper or magazine and wished that you had been the photographer, then wish no more and get out there and practice. Join one of the many local photography clubs or even an online club or photography website," she said.

She added that by using a digital camera, people are not wasting any money by experimenting different techniques as they can just delete images which do not work out.

In other photography news, Sotherby’s said that it is to auction off items from the Polaroid company’s photography collection following a six-day-long display.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19613455-ADNFCR

Netbooks emerging as ‘hot sellers’

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Netbooks are turning into one of the hottest sellers in the computer market, according to an expert.

Ray Saitz, writing for the Peterborough Examiner, said that after years of systems growing larger and more powerful, portable computers are now getting smaller.

“At first glance everything about a netbook looks stripped down. The average screen size is only slightly larger than ten inches, the keyboard is about 80 per cent the size of a regular version and the whole thing could hide under a letter-sized piece of paper,” he added.

However, My Saitz added that netbooks are selling at remarkable rates, as they can wirelessly connect to the internet, do word processing and store large amounts of data.

He commented that with a total weight of less than a kilogram, netbooks are ideal for students, travellers or businessmen.

People who have bought netbooks can install a range of software, including Microsoft Office and iTunes, to allow them to carry out tasks that they normally would on their desktop PC.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19613460-ADNFCR

Dropship named as top free iPod Touch game

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Sci-fi adventure Dropship has been named as the best free game available for users of the iPod Touch.

The TechRadar report said that the title, which is similar to classic games such as Gravitar and Thrust, lets people battle gravity and shoot enemies while searching complex vector-based cave formations for allies.

Jungle Crash Land came second in the website’s poll, stating that it is a “fun freebie which wrenches ancient Peter Calver classic Air Attack (which evolved into Blitz and a billion other ‘city bomber’ games) into the present”.

In third place, Flood-It! 2 gained kudos with the reviewers for meeting the rules of great puzzlers, namely keeping things simple but making it challenging.

Gamers have to ‘flood’ the board from the top left of the screen, aiming to make it one colour using a limited number of taps.

Currently in the App Store’s top 25 free titles, Red Ball, You vs Wall and The Imbecile Test are all proving popular.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19613447-ADNFCR
