Digital SLR cameras recommended to photography fans

Monday, March 15th, 2010

People looking to get involved in photography and take some great pictures should invest in a digital single lens reflex (SLR) camera, according to an expert.

Dave Johnson, writing for PCWorld.com, said that such cameras give people the ability to control as much of the exposure process as they want for each snap, while also giving interchangeable lenses and higher-quality images than point-and-shoot models can manage.

However, Mr Johnson did remind people that no matter how good the tools are, it is the person behind the lens that does all the work.

“What I mean is that the camera doesn’t make eye-popping photos possible, the person behind the lens does. It may be comforting to think that ‘if only I had that new camera, that mediocre photo I just took would have been awesome’,” but the reality is different, he added.

Dennis Bodzash, writing for Examiner.com, backed also praised SLR cameras, stating that they are far faster at focusing than any point and shoot camera.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19668800-ADNFCR

Sony Move controller to be released in the autumn

Friday, March 12th, 2010

The highly-anticipated motion controller for the PlayStation 3 has been given a name and vague release date by Sony.

Known as Move, the next generation peripheral, will be available to gamers in the UK in the autumn, which will place it in direct competition with Microsoft’s Natal motion controller for the Xbox 360 system.

It was also confirmed that the microphone-shaped device will also be accompanied by a sub-controller, which will handle precise character movement, like the Wii nunchuck.

Using the PlayStation Eye camera, the Move system will detect the precise movement, angle and position in 3D space of the motion controller.

This means that whether a person is swinging a golf-club or swishing a sword, the movements will be accurately read and transferred to the screen.

Microsoft’s Natal system will track body movements in 3D, meaning that a controller is not needed. It will also pick up facial expressions and detect change of emotion in a person’s voice to give an in-depth gaming experience.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19665745-ADNFCR

Buying a laptop involves ‘answering a series of questions’

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

People looking to buy a new laptop need to ask themselves a series of questions, according to an industry expert.

Matthew Elliott, writing for PCMag.com, said that firstly a consumer needs to figure out how much they are willing to spend on a new machine.

He told readers of the blog that blowing the whole budget is not always necessary, as high-end configuration is not needed for running basic applications such as Firefox, Skype, Word and Excel.

“Intel recently released a new version of the Atom that consumes even less power, and Intel’s wide range of CULV (consumer ultra low voltage) chips are showing up in full-sized, affordably priced laptops,” the expert said.

Buyers also need to consider what other features they need in a new machine, including high definition output ports, Wi-Fi and Blu-Ray players.

An online guide by Which? recently advised people looking for a new laptop that aspects such as size, weight and speed should also be taken into account.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19663527-ADNFCR

Nintendo Wii praised as Active game brings in mass revenue

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

The capabilities of the Nintendo Wii have been praised by a gaming giant after financial results were revealed for one of its products.

Peter Moore, president of EA Sports, said that the Wii is able to bring new consumers in, while knocking down accessibility issues.

His words come on the back of data which showed that the console’s EA Sports Active title has made £83.5 million.

"Titles that take advantage of motion, particularly with MotionPlus, are really starting to resonate with the consumer. It’s changing the model from a video game positioning to a fitness positioning," he added.

Fans of EA Sports Active have also been told about the next game in the series, which will be released on a number of consoles.

Breaking away from the Wii exclusivity, the 2.0 game will now be available for PlayStation 3, iPod Touch and iPhone users to enjoy, while it will also introduce a new wireless control system with leg straps and a heart monitor.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19663535-ADNFCR

UK is biggest online shopping market in Europe

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

The UK is home to the largest online shopping market in Europe, according to new data.

Forrester Research found that the UK is to sustain a double-digit growth over the next five years, with the number of people using the internet to find and buy products rising from 31 million to 40 million in that time. This will see online retail hit £36.4 billion pounds in this country alone.

Furthermore, the research found that 48 per cent of UK consumers currently use the internet to make monthly online purchases. This is the highest number in Europe, with the average for the rest of the continent sitting at 32 per cent.

Sucharita Mulpuru, vice president and principal analyst at Forrester, said: "The retail innovators over the next five years will demonstrate customer enablement across all touchpoints, not just via a PC-based web browser."

It was revealed earlier this year in a study by the British Retail Consortium that online growth has risen by four per cent on 2009.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19663531-ADNFCR

Tips given for buying a laptop computer

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Buying a laptop is not a simple mission, according to an industry expert, who said that there are a myriad of factors to consider.

Matthew Elliott, writing for PCMag, said that there are some common factors which people need to consider, regardless of what kind of machine they are looking for.

“Unless you’re running intensive, threaded applications with regularity, you don’t need a quad-core processor and will get more than enough oomph from a current dual-core CPU. We recommend mainstream buyers look for Intel’s Core i3 or i5 processors,” he added.

People who are looking for a laptop with a long battery life which they can use on the go should look for a low-voltage machine, as this provides huge gains in longevity.

Laptop fans should also make sure that they buy a machine which is no larger than 14 inches, as this allows them to fit it inside a rucksack and carry it wherever they go.

A recent report by CNET said that users need to look for a machine with a large hard drive and at least 128MB of memory.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19661179-ADNFCR

Gamers to benefit from new PS3 motion control

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Golf fans will be able to take advantage of the PS3′s forthcoming motion control system in the latest Tiger Woods game.

Releasing on all consoles, including the iPhone, EA Sports confirmed that Tiger Woods 11 is set to support Sony’s updated motion controller, which will give gamers a more realistic take on the sport.

However, the game will not be supporting Microsoft’s Xbox360 Natal controller, mainly because the release date for the motion peripheral and title do not correlate well.

MCV.co.uk has drawn a conclusion from this news that Sony’s motion controller could be much closer to launch than the industry realises, while also stating that the Microsoft product could be much trickier to develop for.

EA Sports also confirmed that a North American release date for Tiger Woods 11 is set for June 8th, meaning that a European release for the popular title will likely be a few days later.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19661177-ADNFCR

For the console version of the game, EA have confirmed that it is implementing a new penalty taking method which aims to mirror the pressure of stepping up to the spot with billions of people watching you.

Gamers will have to keep a needle balanced, which will in turn have an effect on how accurate the spot-kick is.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19661173-ADNFCR
