Crysis 2 ‘to perform better on PS3′

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

People considering buying a games console have been told that one of the most highly-anticipated titles will perform better on the PlayStation 3.

Crytek’s upcoming Crysis 2 will be released later this year, with the studio’s business development manager Carl Jones claiming that it is getting more from the Sony hardware than its Xbox 360 rival.

“At the moment, we’re getting slightly more performance from the PS3 compared to the 360. I’m very confident that products using CryEngine 3 are going to come out as the best looking, or at least in the top three, on every platform,” he told PSM3 magazine.

Mr Jones also said that the fact that the studio came to the PlayStation 3 arena late was also proving to be an advantage, as it was able to take its time and work out the right way to approach things.

The original Crysis, which was only released on the PC, gained rave reviews, with Gamespot giving it 9.5 out of ten.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19722296-ADNFCR

PS3 gamers ‘most likely to be online’

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

There is a higher percentage of PS3 users connected to the online world via broadband than on any other console, according to new research.

Data supplied by The Diffusion Group found that 78 per cent of all PS3 owners have their console hooked up to the internet for online gaming and other features such as access to the BBC iPlayer.

Furthermore, 73 per cent of Xbox 360 owners are plugged into broadband, while just 54 per cent of Wii owners have done the same.

“Today’s game consoles are increasingly connected to the internet, not just to enhance their gaming experience but to access the growing variety of online media-video,” said Michael Greeson, director of research at Diffusion.

John Funk, writing for the EscapistMagazine.com, said that the results were surprising given the fact that Microsoft pushes its online features as “core” to the experience.

In recent times, a number of games have been brought out for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 which have proved popular online, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19721463-ADNFCR

Just Dance tops Wii Chart again

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Nintendo Wii owners are still buying the popular game Just Dance, as it stays at the top of the games chart for the second week in a row.

The game, from Ubisoft, is at the top of the ELSPA GfK Chart-Track All Formats Top 40 for the second time this year.

Just Dance is now the third best selling party title to ever be created on the Wii, beaten only by Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games and Carnival Funfair Games.

The chart means that Ubisoft has now had more number ones in 2010 that any other publisher.

Also in the charts this week is Battlefield: Bad Company, in second place, Just Cause 2 in third and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in fourth.

This is followed by Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit Plus, Pokemon SoulSilver, FIFA 10, Pokemon HeartGold and New Super Mario Bros Wii.

Following the first week of number one success, Just Dance brand manager Rachael Grant told Inc Gamers: “We have just sold through over two million units worldwide so it’s clearly a title that is really resonating with so many Wii owners.”ADNFCR-2524-ID-19717340-ADNFCR

Splinter Cell set to come out of the shadows on Xbox 360

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Console fans will be able to get their hands on the latest title in one of the most popular games series later this week.

After a number of delays, Splinter Cell: Conviction is set to hit the shops, with gaming experts describing it as a more gritty affair than previous versions.

Greg Howson, writing for the Guardian, said that there are some moments in the game where stealth hero Sam Fisher carries out some “unashamedly brutal” actions, giving gamers a darker experience.

“While Conviction is more action orientated than older Splinter Cell games, strategy and planning still count. The new ‘mark and execute’ feature allows you to tag enemies before bursting in and dispatching them in one shot,” he added.

Mr Howson also said that this ability is only available after a hand-to-hand kill, with sneaking and stealth still being absolutely key.

Although an exclusive in console land to the Xbox 360, PC gamers will also be able to get their hands on the title later this year.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19715157-ADNFCR

Technology ‘part of our children’s lives’

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Being interested in and wanting to own the latest gadgets is part of children’s lives as they grow up with technology and embrace it, according to a new study.

Research from Halifax found that children spend an average of £383 a year on technology, with 91 per cent owning a games console, including a PS3, Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii.

Richard Sharp, founder of Gadgets and Gizmos, said that the need to have the latest gadgets comes naturally to youngsters as they do not know any different.

“Technology surrounds children and their natural inquisitiveness allows them to integrate technology into their lives in much the same way they would learn to walk and talk; it is a part of growing up,” he added.

The Halifax survey also showed that computer games and equipment are the most expensive purchases, while a further three-quarters of youngsters own a mobile phone.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19715149-ADNFCR

Microsoft offers Xbox gamers more storage

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Gamers are now able to connect their Xbox consoles to external USB storage devices after Microsoft released a special software update.

Previously, players had to rely on the console’s internal hard drive in order to save their games or other information.

However, influenced partly by user demand, the computing giant has confirmed the release of a new software update, which can be downloaded from its site and which can be used to configure external flash drives to connect to the console.

Up to two drives with collective storage space of 16GB each can be linked up to the Xbox and used to store information from saved games and movies, though users will not be able to use external flash drives to load original games or MP3 files.

This comes as it has been revealed that 2.5 million copies of the Xbox version of a new add-on for Modern Warfare 2 were sold in the first week of its release. ADNFCR-2524-ID-19712621-ADNFCR

Nintendo Wii tops global best-selling console charts

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

The popularity of the Nintendo Wii has once again been highlighted by new statistics showing the extent to which it dominated the global consoles market over the past year.

According to the latest research from Ibis Capital, the Japanese firm’s innovative home gaming device accounted for 47 per cent of all console sales over the course of 2009, Gamasutra has reported.

This compared to the 35 per cent market share enjoyed by Microsoft through its Xbox, while Sony was left in third place overall, with its Playstation 3 accounting for just 18 per cent of global sales.

At the same time, the report has also predicted that the popularity of consoles is set to keep on growing as consumers look to move away from their PCs for home gaming.

However, while the Nitnendo Wii may be the biggest seller right now, it has also been noted that the situation could soon change.

“Digital downloadable content and game delivery reduce likelihood of a ninth generation console cycle, creating potentially significant long term issues for Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo and GameStop,” it added.

These predictions come soon after Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing was launched on the Wii. ADNFCR-2524-ID-19708961-ADNFCR
