Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Microsoft has revealed that its latest and greatest operating system, Windows 7, has now sold more than 90 million copies worldwide.

An announcement at the Morgan Stanley Technology Media & Telecom Conference made by chief financial officer Peter Klein revealed the number of licences which have been shifted for the product.

Microsoft’s Brandon LeBlanc also confirmed the news in a blog posting, adding that the firm was "humbled and excited that people are responding so positively to Windows 7 – our customers have made it the fastest selling operating system in history."

A review on TechRadar explained why people have been so keen to buy Windows 7, giving it five stars.

The website stated that it was impressed with the improved performance it offered users, while pinned icons, live thumbnails and window snaps also improved the Aero technology it has built on from Vista.

Furthermore, the fact that Microsoft has dealt with annoying notifications also received the thumbs up from TechRadar.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19650500-ADNFCR

Good reasons for growing popularity of netbooks

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Netbooks have been the rage for the past few years as they can do most things that people want to do with a laptop but at a much cheaper price.

Larry Magid, writing for the Mercury News, said that the fact that they are lighter and smaller than laptops also gives them an advantage.

"It’s ironic that smaller machines are now cheaper than bigger laptops. Until a few years ago, users who wanted a small notebook PC would pay a premium. It wasn’t uncommon for machines under three or four pounds to cost two or three times as much as heavier notebook PCs," he added.

Mr Magid commented that the fact netbooks use Windows XP also gives them an advantage as that operating system is easier to use than Microsoft’s follow-ups such as Vista and Windows 7 which are now running on laptops.

Netbooks are also proving popular with techie fans as they are a perfect size to fit inside a rucksack and take to work or use on the train.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19643141-ADNFCR

Google Chrome ‘perfect browser for netbook users’

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Computing fans who have recently bought a new netbook should try using the Google Chrome internet browser, according to an expert.

Joanna Stern, writing for LaptopMag.com, said that the programme is the "perfect" modern-day browser for a netbook.

She added that most netbooks running Microsoft Windows XP are packaged with Internet Explorer 6, which is now more than two years old.

"Download Google Chrome, the perfect modern-day browser for a netbook. Not only does it boast good memory management, but since it recognises each web page as a different process, if one site freezes, you don’t have to restart the entire browser," she commented.

She also said that by pressing Ctrl and + users can enlarge text, making it ideal for netbook reading.

Other advantages of using Google Chrome on a netbook include being able to add themes and colour to a desktop by brightening up the programme with fresh designs.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19634037-ADNFCR

Apple products highlighted in technology revolution

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

A number of products made by Apple have been highlighted as being part of a recent technology revolution.

Brad Reed, writing for PCworld.com, said that for the past dozen years, Steve Jobs, chief executive of Apple, has led the firm to bigger and smaller product ventures.

The 2001 launch of the iPod is where Apple cemented its status as this decade’s comeback kid, according to Mr Reed.

This was then backed up by the 2006 release of the MacBook Pro, MacBook and MacPro, integrating Intel processors into its computers for the first time.

In the following year, Apple unveiled its iPhone and iPod Touch, which "turned the wireless phone market permanently on its head", according to the expert.

Mr Reed also said that despite not being a revolutionary innovation, the MacBook air launch in 2008 served as a nice new product to show off while Apple worked on its iPad tablet.

It is this tablet which is currently being greatly anticipated, with the stylish device set to be released later this year.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19634034-ADNFCR

‘Little to complain about’ with Apple Macbook

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

The Apple Macbook 13 inch model is an impressive machine which gives performance levels very close to the Pro version, according to an expert.

Chris Hall, reviewing the machine for Pocket-Lint.com, said that stacked up against the most basic Macbook Pro, the 13 inch Macbook looks "pretty good", having the same processor, RAM , graphics and a larger capacity hard drive, all for less money.

He added that the machine has a certain elegance about it, with the lid fitting perfectly when closed and providing a sturdy casing for carrying around in a bag.

"Inside you get the isolated keyboard, which is very comfortable to type on. There is less of a definition between the trackpad and the body of the Mac on this plastic model than there is on the aluminium versions, but … we didn’t find that to be a problem," he added.

The Macbook 13 inch also has a battery which lasts seven hours off one single charge, meaning that it can be taken anywhere for work or play.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19631342-ADNFCR

Netbooks ‘becoming a more viable computer choice’

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

The popularity of netbooks appears to be growing as they are becoming a viable choice when people are shopping for a new computer, according to an industry blog.

Ecommercejunkie said that netbook manufacturers are making a dent in the market with older consumers, as they are people who do not necessarily need huge high-definition screens and beefy processors.

A recent survey by PriceGrabber.com found that 55 per cent of respondents said that netbooks were still a complementary tool to a laptop rather than a replacement. However, the assertion that 45 per cent think that they definatley are a good replacement was a good sign.

"It represents a significant increase in popularity over a very short period of time for a new product competing against one that has had a solid hold in the marketplace and the consumer psyche for quite a while," added the blogger.

Last week, technology giant Samsung unveiled its new 4G netbook, the N150, which could be the face of super-fast broadband portable computing.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19628494-ADNFCR

Netbooks emerging as ‘hot sellers’

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Netbooks are turning into one of the hottest sellers in the computer market, according to an expert.

Ray Saitz, writing for the Peterborough Examiner, said that after years of systems growing larger and more powerful, portable computers are now getting smaller.

"At first glance everything about a netbook looks stripped down. The average screen size is only slightly larger than ten inches, the keyboard is about 80 per cent the size of a regular version and the whole thing could hide under a letter-sized piece of paper," he added.

However, My Saitz added that netbooks are selling at remarkable rates, as they can wirelessly connect to the internet, do word processing and store large amounts of data.

He commented that with a total weight of less than a kilogram, netbooks are ideal for students, travellers or businessmen.

People who have bought netbooks can install a range of software, including Microsoft Office and iTunes, to allow them to carry out tasks that they normally would on their desktop PC.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19613460-ADNFCR

Different operating systems ‘make most of netbooks’

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Netbooks will continue to be a popular portable computer product in 2010, with users being encouraged to try different operating systems to get the most out of their system.

Alastair Otter, writing for MyBroadband.co.za, said that as the machines have smaller screens, slower processors and smaller keyboards that a full-size PC, it was important that people get every last sinew of usability from their operating system.

Easy Peasy Linux, which was previously known as Ubuntu EEE, is an easy-to-use interface which can be installed using a USB flash disk.

"The Ubuntu Netbook Remix interface is custom designed to cater for the smaller screen size and makes it easy to navigate around the system, which is important on the ultra-small netbooks," he added.

Mr Otter also said that Slax is one of the longest-running versions of Linux available and is perfect for use on a netbook. At 200MB in size, it caters for the netbook’s smaller hard drive, while on the Slax website, users can pick and choose features that they want to include.

Users can also download OpenOffice for their netbooks, which allows them to run a free word processor, perfect for writing documents and letters on the move.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19581938-ADNFCR
