Microsoft takes gaming battle 3D with upgrade to Xbox 360

Xbox+360_2524_19770172_0_0_7041218_300Video game companies have taken their fierce battle for customers into the realms of the third dimension, with Microsoft challenging Sony head-on by upgrading its Xbox 360 console to support 3D games.

The US technology giant revealed yesterday that it had signed a strategic partnership with the electronics company LG, as it prepares to bring 3D gaming to the Xbox 360. Gamers in the UK will have to control their excitement for now, as plans seem to be limited to the Asian market at the moment. Yet experts believe the rise of 3D in other formats makes the format’s expansion more likely. The move follows recent announcements by Sony, which has upgraded its PlayStation 3 console to support 3D, and Nintendo, which is planning to release a 3D version of its popular DS  and Wii Consoles.

Microsoft has been concentrating heavily on taking the fight to Nintendo’s extraordinarily successful Wii console, whose motion-sensor-based games have encouraged a whole new group of players into the market. This culminates in the launch of Project Natal at the E3 expo next month. Yet the group clearly believes it needs to offer an alternative to Sony, and yesterday news from South Korea emerged that the Xbox 360 will support 3D games.

PlayStation 3 ‘to outsell Xbox 360 in 2010′

Monday, May 10th, 2010

There will be more PlayStation 3s sold across Europe and North America this year than Xbox 360s, according to a gaming giant.

Activision made its prediction recently, stating that the Sony machine will top nine million sales, with the Microsoft console falling just short of eight million sales.

However, it added that the Nintendo Wii will win the battle of the consoles, topping 18 million sales by the end of the year.

Activision’s year-end installation predictions also saw the Wii topping the charts with 63 million, with the Xbox 360 second with 40 million and the PlayStation 3 third with 32 million.

A growth in the handheld market was also seen by the firm, with an increase of 47 million estimated.

The figures came as Sony announced that Final Fantasy IX will hit the PlayStation Network for download in the near future, joining Final Fantasy VII and VIII for fans of the series.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19766585-ADNFCR

Sony Move controller to be released in the autumn

Friday, March 12th, 2010

The highly-anticipated motion controller for the PlayStation 3 has been given a name and vague release date by Sony.

Known as Move, the next generation peripheral, will be available to gamers in the UK in the autumn, which will place it in direct competition with Microsoft’s Natal motion controller for the Xbox 360 system.

It was also confirmed that the microphone-shaped device will also be accompanied by a sub-controller, which will handle precise character movement, like the Wii nunchuck.

Using the PlayStation Eye camera, the Move system will detect the precise movement, angle and position in 3D space of the motion controller.

This means that whether a person is swinging a golf-club or swishing a sword, the movements will be accurately read and transferred to the screen.

Microsoft’s Natal system will track body movements in 3D, meaning that a controller is not needed. It will also pick up facial expressions and detect change of emotion in a person’s voice to give an in-depth gaming experience.ADNFCR-2524-ID-19665745-ADNFCR
