Causes Insomnia and Depression: Scientists Discover How TikTok Affects Health
Chinese researchers from Tianjin University have conducted a large-scale study to determine how prolonged viewing of short videos impacts the human brain.
The experiment involved 111 students aged 17–30, all active TikTok users. Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), scientists examined structural changes in the brain as well as shifts in behavioral and emotional indicators.
The study revealed increased activity in brain regions responsible for emotional control among those who excessively watch short videos. Special attention was paid to changes in the orbitofrontal cortex — a key brain area for decision-making and emotional regulation.
Results also showed that 50% of participants developed chronic insomnia linked to TikTok use. Their sleep quality declined significantly, and their time to fall asleep increased by 40%. Many also experienced heightened anxiety, and half of them faced depression requiring medical treatment.
Another focus of the research was how personality traits influence negative perceptions of social media. Scientists found that envy significantly amplifies emotional distress, especially when users encounter content showcasing others’ success.

Excessive use of TikTok and similar platforms can have serious mental and physical health consequences. Experts advise limiting time spent on social media and paying close attention to emotional well-being.
