Meta Creates “Superintelligence” in New AI Lab

Meta Platforms Inc. (Facebook, Instagram) is launching a new artificial intelligence research lab with a bold goal — to develop a “superintelligence” that surpasses human cognitive abilities.

Alexander Wang, CEO and founder of Scale AI, will join the initiative. Meta is reportedly in talks to invest billions in Scale AI, which develops tools for training AI models.

This move is part of a major AI restructuring led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Meta is actively hiring top talent from OpenAI, Google, and other leading companies, offering highly competitive packages. Some experts have already accepted the offer.

Since the release of ChatGPT in 2022, Meta has accelerated the integration of AI into its products, including smart glasses and the Meta AI app. In May, Zuckerberg announced that over 1 billion users interact with Meta AI every month.

Long-term, Meta aims not only to develop Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) but to push further — into the creation of superintelligence. The company believes that bringing in Wang will help it stay ahead amid fierce competition, such as Microsoft’s $13 billion investment in OpenAI and Amazon’s $8 billion stake in Anthropic.

Meta remains committed to open-sourcing its AI models. In April, it released new versions of the Llama models. However, according to The New York Times, the results were met with criticism, reportedly frustrating Zuckerberg.
